The Face on the Milk Carton


Do the following tasks and publish them on your blog.

  1. Find information about the author.
Caroline B. Cooney was born in May 10, 1947 in Greenwich. She is an American author of suspense,romance ,horror, and mystery books for young adults. She currently resides in Fort Mill,South Carolina.
Cooney's books have received several honors, including an IRA – CBC Children's Choice and being named an ALA Best Book for Young Adults. Most recently Cooney's Diamonds in the Shadow was named a 2008 ALA/YALSA Quick Pick and was a nominee for the Edgar Allan Poe Award.

  1. Write a short summary of the plot.
    The book is about a fifteen year-old girl called Janie. She lives with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Johnson. Janie has got a lot of friends, her best friend is Sarah-Charlotte Sherwood. For Janie, her neighbor Reeve plays another important role in her life. They know each other for a long time and their parents are friends, too. The relationship between Reeve's and Janie's parents is almost like a relationship between mother, father and children. They know each other very well and Reeve often stays at the Johnson's house. Like every normal teenager, Janie goes to school. Janie would like to have a boy-friend, she would like to meet other boys but she is not allowed to because her parents are too worried. Her life is nice till one day...
  2. Characterize Janie, Reeve, Sarah- Charlotte, Mr. and Mrs Johnson(development throughout the plot)
    Janie : is a fifteen year-old girl. She is very pretty and has got red curls. She is searching for her own identity. Janie does not have any brothers and sisters. She would like to have a boy-friend, but she does not know how to find one beginning because her parents are very strict. She is not allowed to go out alone in the evening.Janie is a curious girl. She wants to know everything and to find out everything. She wants to know all about it
    Reeve : is seventeen years old and Janie's neighbor. He attends the same school as Janie. Later he is Janie's friend. He knows Janie and her family for a very long time and he knows the secret of the family Johnson.
    Sarah – Charlotte : is Janie's best friend. She has white-blonde hair,she is a pretty girl. Like Janie, she loves talking on the phone. She likes to talk about boys. She is interested in having a steady relationship with a boy who has to be tall, muscular, smart, courteous, and rich.
    Mr and Mrs Johnson : are the parents of Janie. They are very worried about „their“ child. Her parents both work during the whole day. Mrs. Johnson works in a hospital and Mr. Johnson in an office. For them, their daughter is the most important treasure,they love her,but a secret is behind the worried,but lovely parents.
  3. Describe Janie’s relationship to her parents and explain how it changes as plot develops.
Janie has a good relationship to her parents, but Janie finds it sometimes very bad if her parents still see her as a small child.

    I like the cover with the black background , because it looks very scary and the readers would read the book,because of the scary cover.
  2. Do you think it is a good idea to put the photos of missing children on milk cartons? Why? Why not?
I would scare me on the milk cartons from the pictures, because I would like to be scared to seeing dead children on the cartons
  1. After Janie has discovered the photo of the little girl on the milk carton she has flashbacks of her former life. What can she remember? Describe her daymares.
  2. Why are her parents reluctant when she asks for her birth certificate? What does she need it for?
    She would like to know if she's fourteen years or fifteen years old.
  3. Do you think her parents should have told her the “truth”? What do they believe the truth is?
    No,it's right that they haven't told her the truth. Janie was a child and she
  4. Imagine you are Janie. What would you do in such a situation? How would you feel?
    I would feel very weird and worried. I would like to know the truth and would ask my "parents" about Hannah.
  5. Describe your favourite scene in detail.
    My favorite scene in the book was when Janie and her friends ate and she herself suddenly discovered on the milk carton, but her friends thought it was not she and didn't believed her.
  6. At the end of the book Janie’s mother phones her “real” parents and hands the phone over to Janie. A woman’s voice answers “Hello”.
  7. Write down the telephone conversation.
  8. Write your personal comment on the book.
    I liked the book , because of the story. The characters are well described and it's fine to read the book.
  9. Choose one character and write 5 diary entries by this person
